PRINTING

Printer: -It is the software which acts as interface between the operating system and the print device.

Print Device: - It is a hardware device used to do printing on the paper.

Print Driver: -It is the software which understands the commands of the print device.

Print Server: -It is the computer to which print device is directly connected. There are some print devices which can be used as Print Server.

Local Printer: -It is the printer installed locally in a computer by connecting the print device to the local computer.

Network Printer: - It is the printer installed in a client PC by connecting to the print server.
A print device which can be assigned an ip address is also called 'Network Printer’. Such print device can be easily accessed from the network and can be given print command.

Spooling: - It is the process in which print jobs are directed to the print server and are saved in the hard disk of the print server. These print jobs are printed one by one on first-come-first-serve basis. The service 'Print Spooler' handle the process of spooling. If you have printing problems, you can restart this service.
To restart this service, go to programs > administrative tools > Services > click on 'Print Spooler'.
Commands to restart this service:
Net start spooler
Net stop spooler

Pooling: -It is the process in which two or more print devices of the same model and make are connected to a single print server. If one print device is busy, the print job is directed to the other print device.

HOW TO INSTALL PRINTER?

1. Go to a win 2000/2003 server computer and connect the print device to it.
2. Insert the CD of driver or go to control panel > printers and faxes > Add Printer.

HOW TO SHARE PRINTER?
1. First create a print server by installing printer in a computer.
2. Now go to client PC and in the RUN, type the ip of the print server:
\\ip of print server\
e.g.
\\10.0.0.1\
3. Click O.K.
4. Click on the sharename of the printer to install the printer.

INTERNET PRINTING
A print server can be connected from a remote client PC over Internet and can be given print command and it can also be administrated remotely. This process is called 'Internet Printing.

PRACTICAL
1. Make a 2003 server computer as Print Server.
2. Connect the server to the Internet and give it a registered ip address so that it can be accessed anywhere over Internet from a remote client.
3. Install IIS and 'Internet Printing' component of IIS.
4. For this, go to control panel > add or remove programs > add/remove windows components > Select 'application server' > Details > Highlight 'Internet Information Services (IIS)' > Details > Select 'Internet Printing' > O.K. > O.K. > next > finish.
5. Go to client PC, open Internet Explorer and type:
http://ip of print server/printers
e.g.
http://10.0.0.1/printers
6. Press Enter.
7. Click on the name of printer > printer actions > connect.
8. Click yes to install printer.
9. Now you can give print command.
10. if there is problem in loading the website, lower the security of Internet Explorer.
